Space is the layer making up the top of the world, above the Surface. Gravity is decreased in Space, which means the player can jump higher and will fall slower, similar to the Featherfall effect. The sky is dark and stars are visible, even when the sun is still up. There are no naturally occurring blocks or objects in Space, although Floating Island or Living Tree parts may extend into it.
Despite being at such high altitudes, players that enter Space do not experience any consequences. They will neither incur the Suffocation debuff nor will the breath meter appear.
Fallen Stars spawn in Space and can appear inside structures made at high altitudes. Harpies and, in Hardmode, Wyverns and Arch Wyverns spawn in Space. Additionally, Martian Probes are more likely to spawn in Space and common enemies such as slimes and Zombies can also appear in Space, given a viable area to spawn on.
The Forest Pylon can be used in Space.

Notes[]
- There is no definite border between the Surface and Space. The transition is smooth; there are different altitude thresholds for the biome's features listed in the table below. These thresholds are based on the area between the surface line and the top of the world. Since the distance between the two differs from world to world due to the randomized world generation, it is impossible to give exact altitudes in feet. Instead, the thresholds can be expressed more accurately in percentages of said area.
Altitude Notes 100% Top of the world > 83.33% Gravity is decreased; amount is in relation to altitude[1] > 70% The Depth Meter declares the area to be "Space"[2] > 65% Space-exclusive enemies spawn (pre-Hardmode)[3] > 55% Space-exclusive enemies spawn (Hardmode)[3] and Depth Hair Dye starts dying the player's hair blue[4] > 50% Space-exclusive fishing loot can be caught[5] 0% Surface line (0ft, "Level" on the Depth Meter), the border between the Surface and the Underground
- On the Old Chinese version and tModLoader 1.3-Legacy version, the Space Night music track will play no matter what time it is, and on the Old-gen console version, Windows Phone version, and Nintendoversion, the Space Day music track will play no matter what time it is.
